Henry Fung
Research Scientist

Henry Fung supports Surgo’s research activities and focuses on applying machine learning approaches to problems in global development and public health. He is an advocate of open data and innovation and is interested in the empirical assessments of human well-being, and their implications for economic and social policy.

Prior to joining Surgo, Henry was a Data Scientist with experience in the private and public sector.  His work ranges from using natural language processing (NLP) techniques to analyze software requirement texts for a project planning tool to inferring the relationship between management practices and employee attitudes in large public organizations.

Henry holds a MA. in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a BA. in Economics and Mathematics from McGill University.

Henry also had a previous career in the aerospace industry. He developed and tested simulation software for Boeing and Airbus autopilot systems at the flight simulator manufacturers CAE Inc. and Textron Inc. in Montreal, Canada.  Henry holds a MASc. in Mechanical Engineering, and a B.Eng in Aerospace Engineering, both from Carleton University.
