James helps Surgo Foundation develop and disseminate its knowledge base through peer-reviewed articles, monographs, and other publications. He has a keen interest in creating text that presents complex information clearly and engages with specialized or general readerships. James helped draft and edit monographs and articles on aspects of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s HIV prevention program in India, including community mobilization, violence prevention, and the use of Technical Support Units, and on voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. More recently, James has been the coordinating editor for a series of global tools on implementing HIV prevention programs with most-at-risk populations, published by United Nations agencies. He has also edited numerous reports on health issues in South-East Asia for the World Health Organization.

James edits news stories on climate change published by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, and proofreads for The Economist. He brings to his work experience living in several developing countries, including Brazil, China, and India. He has a degree in modern languages from Cambridge University.
