Valerie Valerio
Research Scientist
Valerie supports various Surgo initiatives as a Research Scientist – applying innovative data science methods to global health challenges. She is passionate about using novel analytical, data synthesis and visualization techniques to advance the health and development of vulnerable populations in the developing world.
Before joining Surgo, Valerie pursued a PhD in Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida. Her research focused on agricultural value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa, and supported the work of the USAID Feed the Future Livestock Systems Innovation Lab. She contributed to the study of livestock systems as complex systems, using data analytics and simulation models to identify drivers of animal-source foods consumption and livestock productivity, as well as understand and map spatiotemporal patterns of livestock distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa. Previously, Valerie held engineering and retail consulting roles in the pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods industries in the United States and the Dominican Republic.
Valerie received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
